When should I start weaning?

Is there a correct age?

The Department of Health and Children recommends exclusive breast feeding for the first 6 months of life. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) says that 4 months is the earliest age at which to introduce solids.

Before the age of 4 months, your baby’s digestive system is not mature enough to cope with solid foods, and their introduction could lead to food allergies. After 6 months, babies need to start solid foods as the iron stores which have been built up before birth begin to diminish. If you have any questions about when to wean your baby, please consult with your healthcare professional.
