How do I know when to wean?

bg-apricotThere are some developmental signs showing your baby is ready to take solids. The following signs will give you a guide to when the time is right to begin weaning:

  • Your baby can hold up his/her head well
  • Your baby begins to reach for and show an interest in table foods
  • He/she can move their tongue backwards and forwards as well as up and down
  • The lower lip can be drawn in so that food could be taken from a spoon
  • Your baby starts to demand feeds more often
  • He/she will not take more milk but still seems hungry

Weaning at 6 months:

First Foods - Suitable foods are pureed fruit and vegetables (eg banana and carrot), meat, peas and beans, gluten free cereals (eg baby rice). Suitable drinks are breastmilk, formula milk, or cooled boiled water.

Next try bread, pasta and cereals, pasteurised cheese, yogurt and fromage frais. For drinking, continue to give baby breast or formula milk and cooled boiled water. They may also get some well-diluted, unsweetened, pure fruit juice, but only at mealtimes.
